Today, we present the second installment of our two-part series on “Health Care Proxy Preparation.” In Part 1, we underscored the critical importance of making this legal agency decision. In Part 2, we provide guidance on the types of questions and topics you should explore when engaging in a conversation with your chosen representative.
Once you’ve initiated a comfortable dialogue and selected a conducive setting, it’s time to document your wishes. Organize your thoughts in a way that resonates with you, whether through a question-and-answer format, a scale indicating your comfort levels, or straightforward yes or no responses.
The key questions revolve around your end-of-life priorities. Is being surrounded by family crucial to you? How much information do you want about your medical conditions and treatments? Are there specific forms of treatment you adamantly oppose?
Additionally, consider discussing potential sources of disagreement or family tension, as well as significant family milestones you wish to be present for. Determine the level of flexibility regarding your wishes – whether you want your loved ones to adhere strictly to them, even if it makes them uncomfortable, or if you prefer they make decisions that bring them peace when the time comes.
Reviewing the draft you’ve compiled, you’ll then need to complete two crucial legal documents: the official Health Care Proxy document and an Advance Directive, also known as a Living Will. Engaging in these discussions beforehand can significantly ease the process and address any potential areas of uncertainty.
