Cheektowaga Introduces Electronics Drop-Off Program to Combat Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping of electronic waste poses environmental hazards and contributes to unsightly conditions in communities. In a proactive move, Cheektowaga Highway Superintendent Mark Wegner has announced the launch of an electronics drop-off program aimed at providing residents with a safe and convenient way to dispose of electronic waste.

Program Details:

  • Eligibility: The program is open to all residents, but participants are required to register their items and provide proof of residency.
  • Non-Residents: Non-residents interested in utilizing the service will be accommodated with an additional fee of $10.00.
  • Location: The drop-off location is set at the Cheektowaga Highway Department, conveniently situated at 3145 Union Road.
  • Operating Hours:
    • Monday through Thursday: 9 am to 1 pm
    • Fridays: 9 am to noon

How the Program Works:

  1. Registration: Residents need to register their electronic items before drop-off. This process ensures a streamlined and organized disposal system.
  2. Proof of Residency: Participants must provide valid proof of residency to access the program. This requirement helps maintain the service exclusively for Cheektowaga residents.
  3. Non-Resident Fee: Non-residents looking to benefit from the program can do so by paying an additional fee of $10.00, making the service accessible to a broader audience.
  4. Location Convenience: The drop-off location at the Cheektowaga Highway Department offers a central and easily accessible point for residents to responsibly dispose of electronic waste.

Aim to Deter Illegal Dumping:

Illegal dumping, especially of electronic waste, poses serious environmental threats. By offering a designated drop-off program, Cheektowaga aims to discourage illegal dumping practices, providing a legal and environmentally responsible alternative for residents.

Promoting Environmental Responsibility:

This initiative not only addresses the immediate issue of illegal dumping but also promotes a culture of environmental responsibility. By encouraging proper disposal methods, Cheektowaga contributes to the well-being of its community and the broader environment.

Residents are urged to take advantage of this program to dispose of electronic waste responsibly and contribute to the overall cleanliness and sustainability of Cheektowaga.

In general there will be no charges incurred when dropping off items, with a few exceptions:

  • Flat Panel Monitors – $15.00
  • Flat Panel Television – $30.00
  • CRT Monitors – $30.00
  • CRT TV less than 27” – $30.00
  • CRT TV larger than 27” – $50.00

The department advises however that this new program does not replace the current garbage pickup of large appliances such as microwaves and metals, and that the sanitation department needs to be made aware 24 hours prior to putting these items curbside for collection.
